What you need is a DSL (or Cable) model with two network ports -- you connect each of the computers to to the Models as normal, and if your modem is setup right you will get two IP addresses one for each computer.
If that does not happen, then it becomes a bit more tricky-- however still same principle.

You need a switch or a hub (I recommend a switch - similar price ad better performance). You can find a fairly inexpensive switch from vendors such as Linksys, DLink, or SMC that would meet your needs if you have only two computers to connect. You then connect the switch to your router (the device that provides your internet connection). I purchased a five-port switch for approximately $30. Each computer must have a network card (aka NIC) in it (most computers manufactured in the past 5 years come with one or they can be purhcased for $5-$25 each) and then a the comptuers are connected to the switch through network cables.
All of the connections can be made with network (aka ethernet or category5 (CAT5)) cables that can usually be purchased at Best Buy, Radio Shack, CompUSA, or over the internet, etc.
Inexpensive switches generally require no programming or setup besides plugging them in and connecting the devices. These type of switches are called "unmanaged" switches. "Managed" switches offer greater performance and have configurable settings, but also cost substantially more and would not be useful in your setting.
Depending on your internet connection type, you can also find a router that has a switch built into it so that you have only a single device that both connects you to the internet and shares the internet connection among multiple computers and/or other types of devices. You can also buy a router that has a switch for wired connections and also has wireless capabilities all for under $100.

add a router for the 2 cpu's...
use a KVM for using single monitor , mouse and keyboard.
the routers today are built in with switch to connect more than one computer...so need to waste money on another $30 switch when u can get a router for $50 - $60 (max price for a very good Router)
there is something called as KVM2KIT from linksys...that solves your single monitor, mouse, keyboard problem !!

you can not two computers to the same monitor. but you could switch from computer to computer or buy a second monitor. As for the keyboard mouse and Internet they connect to the back of your computer.

For the internet all you need is a router. Any standard 4-port router should work to split the internet connection between the to.

You have to create a small network between these two PCs.
Just a simple search in YAHOO and voila :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/russel_hni.mspx
http://compnetworking.about.com/od/homenetworking/a/connecttwocomp.htm
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/home-network.htm
Don't except anyone here to WRITE something about that :-)
You can find several solutions but i suggest using Ethernet on a modem-router.
