Some folks are rich by hard work. Some are rich by inheritence. Some from good investing skills, and others, simply because they know how to manipulate. Some folks are poor because a lack of education keeps them limited in their jobs. Some are poor because despite not having adequate money to begin with, they continue to keep having children and thus becoming poorer. Some are poor because they are addicted to a life of drugs and alcohol and refuse to get help to get better. And some are poor, simply because they can't get a break no matter how hard they try.
There are some poor people, like you said, that are happier than rich. This is true because, they take the time to learn about family values, ethics, morals, and they know that happiness comes from WITHIN.
I have been both dirt poor, living on welfare, and I have been well off too so I know what it's like on both ends. Money does not rule me and it never will. Like one fella said earlier, I am not going to bust my butt 18 hours a day, just to maintain a luxurious lifestyle. I would rather be home with my family spending quality time, and teaching them the value of a dollar. If I want the nicer things in life, I work, I SAVE my money, and when the time is right, I take that much anticipated vacation, or I purchase something nice.
Sadly, in America, too many people are worried about keeping up with the Jones'. And all the while, their missing the babies first steps, or the soccer match at their childs school, or even how pretty that tree is growing out in the back yard. "Money is the root of all evil." Too much of it can land you in the wrong place, and too little of it can do the same. Money or the lack of it will NEVER make you truely happy. Happiness comes from within. Always has and always will.

Because we are in denial as to what is really important. We do need money to pay bills and have some sort of entertainment. But from the time we are children to adults we are continuously brainwashed with images and messages that we only matter by our materialist ownership that we don't out right own any way because we are so far into credit card debt. We are not shown that we are good people with out the cable TV, without living at the Mall and buying useless stuff. I'm a hypocrite-I love to shop and am in so much debt.
The poor people who are happy are really not poor because unlike most of us-they are happy and feel blessed with what they have. Most of them are religious which gives them even more to live for.
I remember when Friday nights were taco or pizza night when I was a kid.I didn't live at the mall. Didn't take alot of money but we had a blast I would laugh so hard I would fall off my chair.

The rich get richer and the poor just get poorer.
The top 1% of the population, holds 99% of all the wealth.
Poor people out number the rich, by, almost, a million to one.
There are people on this planet who have no concept of money or monetary value, and they seem to get along fine, until a wealthy corporation comes along and digs up their forest for profit. With the exeption of the technology industry, most wealthy people got that way by selling the natural rescorces of planet Earth. Oil, Mining, Logging, Fisheries, and so on.
It is pure greed that drives these people.
If you are religeous , the bible tells you, "it is easier to pass a camel thru the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the gates of heaven. Of course, it also states that the "streets of heaven are paved with gold"
If you aren't religeous, Cheif Seattle once said, The white man will not understand the true value of money until he throws his lust bundle onto the fire for warmth.
I've been rich and I've been poor. Life is a lot more fun when you are poor.

To have money is not limited to the western culture. Money speaks a universal language. Without it, we are nothing. We have nothing and I mean, we can't even have the basic necessities to sustain life.
I have known many very poor people and they are not happier than people with money. That is a myth. They are resigned to their poverty and make the best of it. That doesn't mean they are happy. Their life span is shorter and many poor people die a needless early death because of lack of health care and nutritional needs.
As for the very rich, they either were handed old money or they worked their asses off and took great risks that paned out for them in a great and wonderful monetary return.

Not only in the western culture. Everywhere it is so.
The values of world flows to that little elf.
And naturally the world will run behind that pelf.
Happiness has nothing to do with riches. Anyone at any level can be happy. The secret of happiness is to "live within the means in every sense". Otherwise in the street or in the throne, there is no happiness.

Money doesn't rule our lives entirely but it has become like a chain. The reason is that we aren't comfortable giving without receiving in equal measure. If instead of bartering thousands of years ago, mankind would help out his neighbour without expecting any kind of recompense, then money would not exist now. There would be considerably less crime, less war and less famine and most of us could commit our lives to improving our relationships.

Money rules because the only way an animal can survive is by doing work. And money is supposed to be the universal tender for work

It doesn't rule mine,I've never been cursed with greed, all I need is eneough to pay the day to day bills, then I'm happy.I'm not interested in working 18 hours a day to fund a big mortgage or fancy car,i'd rather spend my time relaxing with my family.I think people who sacrifice quality time with their family, just to keep up with the Jones's are nuts.No-one on their death-bed has ever wished they had spent more time in the office.

to be happy it doesn't make much of a difference if your rich or poor as long as you know how to appreciate what you have.

Because National and Regional Governments demand taxes.
So even if you could barter for other services and goods, they demand money.
