This can be caused by corrupt sound device drivers, especially if you've got Realtek AC97 sound.
Remove the device from 'device manager' then reboot and let it redetect (you will possibly be asked for the driver CD during this process).

if it is windows media it sounds like "play speed settings" open media....click on the little white square in the top right......go to enhancements.....then play speed settings and tick the little box that says "snap slider to common speeds"

If its windows media player..unistall and reinstall it with all the free codes packs you can get!!
