Get a Trek or a Gary Fisher, they cost more but when it comes to bicycles, you truely do get what you pay for. Anyone who tells you " a bikes a bike", doesn't ride one regularly. At the same time, if you go out and spend a fortune on a bike, at the end of the day it's still just a bike. I paid $1100 for a bike and it got stolen.:( If I were you, I'd set my budget around $400. I hope this helps.

Last year I bought a 15 speed mongoose mountain bike from walmart...it has a front disk brake, ez writst shifting, ex removeable front wheel and seat, and front and rear shocks, it is better than anything availble 10 years ago, it has an aluminum frame, and is really light....
If your budget is kind of tight, you can get a bike at any goodwill, but be prpeared to a few repairs

You should get one around 100 bucks. If this seems a little high, its probably because you will not have to buy one again, it will last longer. I have one for 150, and it is 5 years old. and still good. the only thing you need to change is the tires. Also, try to get one on ebay....
