Well I am stumped and have already gotten the "Oh My Gosh, my parents don't even know 5th grade math" eye-roll.

Here is a couple examples of the questions my daughter needs help on.
Write the equivalent decimal for each:
1.) 0.3
2.) 5.00

Since they are already decimals- I have no idea what they want.

Thanks in advance!

Ronald T- you are the man. As soon as she read your answer, she remembered. It seemed so simple that I wasn't sure- but they're learning place value now so that makes sense.

Principal- Thanks for answering! I was thinking the same thing.

I think you should just add/remove some zeros at the end of the decimal to find an equivalent one.

1) 0.300000000
2) 5.0

5th Grade Math Homework

I believe it has to do with the different expressions of each number. For example: 0.3 can be expressed this way:

.3 = .30 = .300 = .3000 or

3/10 = 30/100 = 300/1000 = 3000/10000

The number 5 is a whole number so anything after the decimal is irrelevant. Examples:

5 = 5.0 = 5.00 =5.000 and so on.

Hope this helps!!

like
0.30
or 5.0

those are equivalet to the first 2, check out this site, it explains it very well

The only way to rewrite a decimal without changing its value is to add extra zeros at the end or remove them from the end.

So you could answer those two questions:

1.) 0.3000

2.) 5.0

which seems kind of dumb, but are you sure the question said "the equivalent decimal" and not "an equivalent decimal"? If it did, the textbook it came out of belongs in the trash.

I have to think that this is a typo and they want the equivalent fraction.

Tell her that you consulted with an elementary school principal and I didn't know 5th grade math either!
