What special things do I have to do? we are moving and I have to bring the tree to our new home.

Depends on when you have to move it. If you MUST take it now, dig out as much of the rootball as you can, wrap it in burlap, keep it moist and plant it again immediately. If it can't be done immediately, keep the rootball moist until you can put it in the ground. Then treat it as you would a new planting, i.e. water it deeply once a week until frost. Fall is actually not a bad time to plant; the top growth goes dormant so all the energy goes into new root formation until the ground freezes.

If you can wait until spring, root-prune it now. Eyeball the dripline... then insert a spade in the ground in a circle 6" to a foot inside the dripline. This circle you cut will sever the root system and new growth will begin inside it. In the spring, dig the tree out following the circle you cut in the fall. Again, treat as a new planting, watering deeply once a week through the first summer. Voila - Bob's your uncle!

by digging around the whole root ball, packing the root ball in a moist nap sack, or something of the sort. When replanting, make sure to water real good.

all the advise is good - but move it in the winter when the tree is dorment :)
