Some personality's just do not mix with other people. I have a sister that even though she is nice and pretty she does not have many friends, mostly in part I think to just being to hard on her assumptions of others and partly due to her just not being that confidant to make more and new friends.
Try to encourage your friend to be confidant in who he is and that will show through to others and more people will feel that because he is openly confidant he would probably be fun to hang out with. Just remember that having allot of friends is not always so great, it is better to have one good friend then to have ten not so good friends.

I too have the same quality. And it varies for each person. I like to be alone. It somehow gives a feeling that I am having a space which belongs to me. It also gives a sense of peace and helps to concentrate more. Perhaps your friend too is like me.
