Gas is high, the tickets are expensive, the food is bad AND expensive. Theatres are dirty, musty and gross. Why not download and stay home?

I think they're already on the way out...

I personally love the drive-ins. There's still one near us and for $5 a person, you can watch two movies and take in pizza, coolers with drinks, etc. Quite a bargain! I understand there are less than 700 left in the entire US, though.

Good question.

I think multiplexes have been the solution and will continue to thrive. And currently each movie is "double dipping" in that they profit from us at least twice because we pay to see it at the movies AND then rentals AND then again because we pay for cable. So, the film industry is doing just fine no matter how they whine and moan.

They are certainly taking a hit from the cable and DVD industry but they felt threatened 50 years ago when TV was invented.

My guess is that they won't be "rare" but they will be cheaper, there will be few 'high end' theaters with larger screens and the over all numbers of movies will have smaller budgets.

The Film Industry is finding and using the same thing that TV is doing -- they know we'll go see anything so their goals are not so lofty as they once were. It's sad but look at the box office numbers and the movies are mostly crap and poorly written -- Mr and Mrs Smith for example or You Me and Dupree -- a horrible film experience!

I know, I know ... every generation thinks its all worse than it was, but I do think the quality of the technology goes up and the quality put into the work is going down.
