It all depends on your definition of defeat. I personally think that neither Israel nor Hezbollah won or lost. I see Lebanon as the only loser.

One picture tells the whole story. The photograph shows a long column of Israeli soldiers, grimy and bedraggled, limping southwards towards the Israeli border. The lead soldier looks vacuously at the camera with an expression of pure gloom and fatigue. In the background a soldier is seen comforting another who is crying inconsolably.
This is what defeat looks like.
Back in Israel, the headlines are splattered with every detail of the ongoing withdrawal from Lebanon. The op-ed pages and talk shows lash out at anyone even remotely involved with the month-long debacle. Prime Minister Olmert has become the favorite target of the media’s scathing criticism and the brunt of every joke. His public approval has dipped from a pre-war high of 80% to a meager 40%. Meanwhile, political rival Benjamin Netanyahu’s popularity has soared to a hearty 57% making him the likely successor if Olmert is forced to step down.
Israel is drowning in collective angst and self-pity. The defeat has shattered the national sense of self confidence and well being. A joke that is circulating in Tel Aviv opines that Ariel Sharon’s condition suddenly worsened “when he found out what was happening in Lebanon.”
The punch-line epitomizes the general state of malaise in Israel.
The coverage of the Lebanon fiasco in the Israeli media is alternately narcissistic and hysterical. The details of the massive destruction to Lebanon’s civil infrastructure and environment are brushed aside as inconsequential; the 1,300 civilian deaths, irrelevant. The only thing that matters is Israeli suffering; everything else is trivial. While Lebanon is busy digging out another 300 or so corpses from the rubble of their destroyed homes, Israel is preoccupied with its loss of “deterrents” or its battered sense of “invincibility”.
It is an interesting study in the prevailing megalomania of Israeli society, a culture as pathologically self-absorbed as its American ally. It’s no wonder security is so hard to come by when people are so lacking in empathy.

A little early to call it a defeat. Its just a cease fire. Israel could finish Hezbollah terrorist off later when the UN doesn't work out.

By promoting the idea that Israel was "defeated", consent for later US involvement might be being manufactured. Be careful what you think and share with others on this. It is important that the american people are not manipulated into supporting US invlovement behind "poor defeated Israel". Our trigger happy leaders need as much of your blind support as possible, but dont give it to them. Dont let your consent for further war be manufactured by lies and deciet.

Yup. And the entire Western World is next . . . just as soon as Iran gives Hezbollah nukes.
Because Hezbollah isn't limited to Lebanon. They're in your neighbourhood too!
Be afraid. Be very afraid.

DETROIT FREE PRESS:
Israeli troops see tough foe
July 24, 2006
BY BENJAMIN HARVEY
ON THE ISRAEL-LEBANON BORDER -- Israeli soldiers returning from the front in Lebanon talk of battling an intelligent, prepared and ruthless guerrilla army whose fighters don't seem to fear death.
The troops describe Hizballah guerrillas hiding among civilians and in underground bunkers two or three stories deep -- evidence, they say, that Hizballah has been planning this battle for many years.
"It's hard to beat them," one soldier said. "They're not afraid of anything."
The soldiers, most of whom declined to give their names under orders from superiors, described exchanges of gunfire in between houses on village streets, with Hizballah rebels sometimes popping out of bushes to fire Kalashnikov rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and anti-tank missiles.
The troops' comments underscored the enormous challenges Israel faces as it seeks to neutralize Hizballah, which captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid July 12, provoking a fierce Israeli response.
Despite Israel's enormous firepower, which already has killed 380 Lebanese, some military analysts say the fighting isn't going particularly well for the Jewish nation. It has been unable to push the guerrillas back significantly or stop hundreds of their rockets from slamming into northern Israel.
For the past few days, Israel has been fighting for control of the tiny southern Lebanese village of Maroun al-Ras, located on a hilltop less than 500 yards across the border. The army said it had taken the village, but officers at the scene confirmed there was still fighting to do.
"They're not fighting like we thought they would," one soldier said of Hizballah. "They're fighting harder. They're good on their own ground."
One soldier said the guerrillas wore olive green army uniforms "to confuse us" because Israelis wear the same. Others said Hizballah members hid underground in reinforced bunkers until they thought it safe to come out and attack.
"It will take the summer to beat them," said Michael Sidorenko, 21. "They're not normal soldiers, you know. They're guerrillas. They're very smart."

nobody won this stupid war. nobody got out on top. neither side got what they wanted. when that happens, it usually means that there's more war on the way.
in any case, nobody ever wins in war. it's a question of losing less than your opponent...
