We never had a typical serious relationship but have pretty much kept in touch by phone or email periodically for years, long distance. We have both had other relationships in our past well. Recently while helping me thru a hard time, he brought up when we first met and said he feels there has always been love between us. He also commented that there is a chemical reaction to me. This was all in the context of supposively being there for me as a friend, but seems to send me mixed signals. I dont really know how to take this and have been hesitant to get back to him about it.

The question is, Are you into him? Or is it just him finally recognising true love?

If yes then dont confuse him, give him clear signals, if he is serious then he would be hanging on too on your procrastination, and if he is not then it is better that you know, as then, you can move on.

I found out threw life, you should be open and ask him if he has feelings for you now. you will never know ,unless someone makes the first move .maybe,if he has feelings for you,he is afraid ,he might scare you away. If you have feelings for him, tell him how you feel.it sounds like he will always be there for you ,no matter what.

if your both in an existing relationship than don't even bother persuing it. just tell him its great that you can still be friends after so many years.

If you don't ask, you'll never know the answer. Step out on faith in yourself, add another log, watch to see if it burns.

Maybe he was trying to see if your vulnerability would get you into bed...or maybe he was trying to see where you stand on feelings for him.
