It could be that you're not spooling your print job, which means that the application is only feeding as much information to the printer as the printer has memory for and then waiting until the printer request more information. Spooling prints to a file and then the print job works in the background.
To check that you're spooling click Start > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes. Right-click on your printer and select Properties and select the Advanced tab. Check to make sure the Spool print documents button is selected.
Also, you might want to check was quality you're printing at. If you're always printing at the highest quality it will take longer and more resources from your computer (and also use ink faster). Try kicking it down to an average quality for everyday use and only kick it up when printing photos.
Finally, your computer's resources have a lot to do with this as well. Your processor speed, memory, and number of programs you have running can all affect the performance of your computer. If you don't have a lot of memory to begin with and you're printing memory intensive things like photos your computer is going to end up doing a lot of paging to virtual memory. If you have 256MB of less of memory, trying adding another 256MB to bring your system up to 512MB. I usually recommend that people run at least that if not 1GB of memory.

Sounds like you are set up to print directly to the printer without spooling. You're likely printing at best quality considering the nature of your work. I would suggest enabling spooling or print to a file and then let the printer print in the background. Otherwise your computer is waiting for the printer to accept more data and you are waiting while your computer waits on the printer which is doing the best it can. My HP Photosmart takes about 12 min to do an 8x10. If I don't spool, I stop for lunch.

It's more likely a driver problem. Try deleting the printer from hardware via the Device Manager. Then reboot with the printer turned on. Windows should recognize it as "new hardware", and let Windows choose the generic driver for it. Then try printing again. If that doesn't solve the problem, go to the website of your printer's manufacturer and download the most recent driver for the particular printer you have and load that driver. Good luck.

Not only.
Your printer use your CPU to create the page to print and your PC memory to spool the pages until they are sent out to the printer.
Slow Cpu, low memory and a big document with a lot of graphics can indeed bogg off your PC.

Computer Slow
Download and then run startup.exe (FREEWARE) at:
http://www.mlin.net/startupcpl.shtml......
Can't live without it and windows...
Then disable and/or uninstall whatever u don't need.
Other things to try:
1 - Disk Cleanup (removal of temp files, cookies, etc.)
2 - Defrag
3 - Registry Cleanup (CAN BE VERY RISKY!)
FROM A HARDWARE PERSPECTIVE THE BEST AND MOST COST EFFECTIVE POSSIBLE UPGRADE (IN GENERAL) IS THE ADDITION OF MORE MEMORY (RAM).
ALL ELSE FAILS - RELOAD YOUR O/S (WINDOWS) AND THEN REINSTALL ALL OTHER PROGRAMS YOU NEED/USE!
