Many sewing patterns come in size ranges. Buy the one that includes your size. If you aren't sure what I'm talking about, here's an example.
Pattern A comes in sizes.
Small- 0, 2, 4.
Medium- 6, 8, 10
Large- 12, 14, 16.
X-Large-18, 20, 22
You cut the pattern to the size lines, then pin it to the fabric, and cut the fabric.
If you've already bought the pattern, and it's either one size, or you cut it to the wrong size, you have two options.
1. Throw it out and buy new.
2. Figure out how much you need to add. If the pattern is short by two inches in the waist, pin it to the fabric then add 1" all the way around the pattern. Mark it with the chalk for cutting lines. Make sure you are including hems in your additions. You'll need at least 1/4 for a seam, and 2" for a bottom hem.
