Because for some people, their talking voice is lower than their singing voice - and if they sing in the same tone as when they talk, they won't be able to go very low. So then people sing in higher voices to reach a good range.

(In conferences interior the U.S., even i stumble on myself lowering my voice, because people react more beneficial effectual...) If someone became speaking at his lowest conceivable voice, then each and every time that man or woman had to sing, to go away some room for low notes the man might want to ought to commence at a larger element than their wide-spread speech element. In maximum different international places, the position maximum men don't experience obliged to apply their lowest conceivable voice in speech, they are waiting to commence making a music starting up off around the appropriate the position they sometimes talk. wish this facilitates

When you open your throat to sing you increase the force of air going over your vocal chords and the overall adjustment in throat muscles creates more tension in your vocal chords than when you talk. When a vibrating string, or vocal chord, is put under tension the frequency of vibration increases, i.e. produces a higher note.

Depends what you're singing- if you're doing Barry White, you sing really low. Guess you sing along to a lot of Spice Girls...

It's because when you sing your vocal cords are stretched a little tighter (to give you more control over the notes).
There's a little more to it than that; you should check out the link.
