My Epson Stylus CX 5200 started showing "printer error - - - > see your Documentation & call service if necessary" . I've turned it off & on a dozen times w/no change. Can it be repaired cheaper than buyin new, at about $130?

Depends on what the problem is. There is going to be a charge for diagnosing the problem, repairing, and then parts if needed. Usually printers are so cheap these days that I'd rather just toss it and buy a new one, less hassle.

The new Epsons actually have individual ink cartridges for each color and they run about $13 each. This is nice since you only replace what you need. I have the Epson CX4800 and got it for $99!

it is almost always cheaper to buy new than to repair printers nowadays - go shopping for a new printer that does the functions you are looking for and also examine which ones may have the least expensive cartridges as some have fairly expensive cartridges

Printers are disposable now. Its cheaper to buy a new one then buying replacement ink.
CX 5200 are obsolete now, you can get a better printer for 80.00, just be prepared to buy another one when it runs out of ink. ;-)

Turning the power off doesn't necessarily reset the printer. Pull the power plug for at least 10 seconds, and then try it again.
