Pollution can be defined as an undesirable and excessive addition of substances to air, water and land which adversely alters the natural environment.

Depending upon the cause, effects, medium or duration, the pollution could be of six main types :

Air pollution.
Water pollution.
Soil pollution and pollution caused by solid wastes.
Noise pollution.
Thermal pollution and
Radiation as a pollutant.

Air pollution

Air pollution is one of the most dangerous forms of pollution that is reported in most industrially developed nations.
Air pollution may be caused by (1) gases (Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and oxides of nitrogen etc.) or (2) paniculate suspensions (lead, fly ash from power plants, cement dust etc.)
Control of Pollution

Methods for controlling air pollution :

Selection of a fuel or raw material which causes less pollution.

Selection of a process of manufacture or activity which causes less pollution.

Installation of efficient pollution control devices such as filter bags and electrostatic precipitators which arrest suspended particulate matter (SPM).

Absorption towers or converters for gaseous pollution.

Release of pollutants at a sufficient height where it gets diluted due to winds.

Planting of vegetation around industrial areas.

Water pollution

Water is needed for the maintenance of life, irrigation, industries, hydroelectric power and disposal of sewage etc. Availability of water of proper quality is going to be a major problem in the coming years.

Harm caused by water pollution :-

1. It degrades the quality of water.
2. It disturbs and destroys the balance of eco-system.
3. It causes hazards to public health.

Water pollution is being caused mainly due to (a) domestic, (b) industrial / and (c) agricultural activities :-

A. Domestic wastes

Domestic wastes include :

human and animal excreta.

food residues, cleaning agents and detergents.

dead bodies, household garbage etc.

B. Industrial Wastes

Harmful Effects of Industrial Wastes

Chemically polluted water

damages the growth of crops.

disturbs aquatic vegetation.

renders water unfit for human and live stock consumption.

C. Agricultural Wastes

Harmful effects of Agricultural pollution

Insecticides used in crop protection destroy eggs and egg larvae of aquatic animals.

Pesticides on reaching water bodies(taken through water or by consuming pesticide contaminated food) cause hormonal imbalance in human beings.

Consumption of water containing fertilizers may even prove lethal for small children.

Prevention and control of water pollution

Sewage should be fully treated before releasing in the rivers.

No garbage should be dumped in water bodies.

All effluents (wastes) from industries should be treated to render them ineffective before release.

Waste water is put to mechanical filtering, biological decomposition and finally chlorination to make it germ free and safe for human consumption.

3. Soil Pollution

Soil pollution is the process which renders the soil unproductive. Many processes cause damage to the thin fertile layer of soil. This part of the soil is important for crop production.

Soil quality may be changed by use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides.

Use of waste or polluted water for irrigation.

Salination of soil.

Disposal or accidental leakage of radioactive material.

Disposal of solid wastes from domestic, industrial or hospitals.

Harmful Effects of Soil Pollution

Decrease in irrigated land thereby reduction in agricultural production.

Decrease in soil productivity.

Carry over of pollutants in to the food chain.

Damage to landscape

Control of Soil Pollution

Judicious use of chemical fertilisers & pesticides.

Proper and appropriate irrigation practices.

Conversion of farm wastes into compost and large use of Bio fertilisers and manure in farming.

Ensure use of pollution free or treated waste water only for irrigation.

Recycling of waste material for example plastic, metal and glass are recyclable and incineration ofnon recyclable wastes.

4. Noise Pollution

Harmful Effect of Noise Pollution on Human Body

Noise effects human body in a number of ways :

Loss of hearing or damaged ear drum.

Headache and irritation.

Inability to concentrate at work.

High Blood pressure and altered breathing.

Neurological, psychological and Nervous system disorders.

Malformation of foetal (unborn babies) nervous system.

Control of Noise Pollution

Proper lubrication and regular maintenance of machinery and gadgets.

Sound proofing of work places by use of protective enclosures or barriers.

Use of ear plugs or devices.

Restrictions on indiscriminate use of loud speakers.

5 Thermal Pollution

Discharge of hot water from power plants and industries into water bodies is called Thermal Pollution. The coal, oil, gas fired, nuclear power plants and a host of industries utilising heat discharge a lot of waste heat into water bodies. The sudden rise in temperature of the water environment causes the following :

Kills fish and other aquatic life.

Reduction in dissolved oxygen of water.

Altered metabolic activities of organisms.

Control of Thermal Pollution

Use of cooling ponds and cooling towers.

Release of hot water in the deep sea through, long pipes.

Installation of waste heat recovery systems in industry.

6. Radiation-an Environmental Pollutant.

Exposure to radiation may affect both young and adults. Entry of children below 18 years and pregnant females is prohibited in the nuclear installations. Nuclear radiation may have the following harmful effect.

Cancer in child

Male sterility

Malformation of the growing embryo

People working in the nuclear establishments can be provided protection against radiation by

Increasing the distance between the source of radiation and the working people.

Use of lead shields to serve as absorbing material.

Thick concrete walls around the reactor to work as shields.

GreenHouse Effect

Green House is referred to a glass chamber where plants are grown in order to provide them comparatively warm climate by trapping solar radiation and heat. The infrared rays can pass through the glass and the heat generated therefrom inside the chamber cannot escape. In atmosphere certain gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and oxides of nitrogen, ozone etc. allow solar radiation's to come in and trap them on the earth's surface. Rapid deforestation (cutting of trees, which would otherwise take in CO^), industrialisation and urbanisation have caused gradual increase in carbon dioxide concentration leading to global warming or green house effect.

Harmful effects of global wanning

Melting of ice caps and glaciers is raising the sea level and the coastal areas and islands are getting submerged.

Reduced grain size in crops because of early maturation.

Unfavorable effect on human health and efficiency for work.

Methods of controlling global warming

1. Planting of more trees.

2. Increased use of solar and wind energy in place of fossil fuels.

I'm not sure how reliable the figures in this webpage are but I got some info from:

http://www.skole.karmoy.kommune.no/wboe/comenius/greenh.htm

Greenhouse gases, i.e. carbon tetrafluoride and some carbon hexafluoride, are formed when anode effects occur in electrolytic cells. Installation of point feeders has reduced the pollution in the Søderberg potrooms the latest years. 56 tonnes of CF-gases are equivalent to 340.000 tonnes of CO2.

Carbon dioxide, CO2, is the gas produced during the electrolytic reduction process when anode carbon are consumed as a reduction agent. The amount of CO2 emitted will therefore be proportional with the amount and metal produced - 1,51 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of aluminium produced. With the additional emissions of CO2 from combustion of gas and oil, the total emissions of CO2 are 41 tonnes pr hour, i.e. 359.000 tonnes per year. The emissions of CO2 have no impact on the local environment. They are reported and included in the national greenhouse gas account.

There are more links on the page...

You can also look at:
http://www.rediff.com/money/2006/apr/08gas.htm
for a little info on history of what types of pollution we encounter (again, not sure how reliable the info is, since it is not a peer-reviewed page)...

I found this next link to be quite informative about the difference between Greenhouse gases and other pollution... if it is true:
http://www.renewingindia.org/clighg.html

And the BEST page I found with just pure data:
http://yosemite.epa.gov/oar/globalwarming.nsf/UniqueKeyLookup/RAMR6P5M5M/$File/06FastFacts.pdf
but being from the government, you KNOW that it is skewed somehow.
