Make it personal and don't let a whole bunch of other people correct it. You want the schools to hear your voice and know who YOU are, not your parents or your english teacher.
Don't focus on your weaknesses and be sure you are honest in your essay.

Unless you are applying to a prestigious university, it is pretty hard to get rejected. Just be sure to fill out any work history you've had and any extracurricular activities. If you don't have any official volunteer work, think about times when you've done stuff for free: such as tutoring friends or worked at your job off the clock.

Not sure if anyone else said this yet, but just don't make mistakes on the app. What I'm talking about it spelling mistakes (or typos if you're doing it online). And if there is a writing requirement, or a personal statement that has to be submitted, make sure you do well on that part.
