the engine at idle revs up to around 1200 and drops down to normal idle, 700 or so. The charge light is on but its charging at least a little bit. I took the positive wire off at my friends advice to check and the engine died so he is saying the alternator is bad. Could anyone tell me any ideas on why it is doing this and if the alternator is really bad? Thanks in advance for any help

wanted to make sure the alternator was really bad with that test as I haven't used it before. The more important question, the one i says I didn't know why its doing it, is why is it idling the way it is

Have your vehicle inspected by a qualified professional.

The old "Disconnect the battery and see if the car stalls" technique for diagnosing alternator problems, thanks to advanced computer engine contols, can be a very costly mistake.

An alternator should charge between 13.6 and 14.6 volts when the engine is running.

An alternator provides electrical power to the engine when it is running. A "surge" in idle speed can be caused by malfunctioning computer controls, a malfunction in the fuel delivery system, an elelectrical malfunction, etc., but not by a bad alternator.
