Hey John,
The following is a quote from the first web site listed:
"Graphite pencils, colored pencils, and paper recommendations:
400 series Strathmore paper - decent all-around paper, not too expensive.
400 series, Strathmore paper, recycled paper- good prices
Kimberly drawing pencils - I remember using these pencils when I first started drawing. They are just fine.
Derwent sketching pencils - can be used wet or dry. - I am not sure if these pencils are for everyone, but they can have their uses. Use them as a regular pencil (dry) or put a wash over them, and they are like a watercolor. Versatile!
Sanford turquoise drawing pencils - I use these pencils all the time. Excellent.
Colored pencils - There are many types of colored pencils. I usually use Prismacolors or Derwent.
Prismacolors - the brand of colored pencil I personally recommend. Get as large of a set as you can. (24 pencils would be the bare minimum"
This looks like the advise you are looking for.

I actually still use a Ticonderoga #2 Shcool pencil for quite a bit of pencil work. If I want a stark black look, I use a Conte' Crayon pencil.
As far as colored pencils I have about 1,000 in a box that I pick through constantly. I've been Drawing, painting and Cartooning for 40 years. I think the best are what suits the artist.

There are a million kinds of pencils to use out there (I see someone listed many of them already, whew!), But really, it all depends on what you like. As a skilled draftsperson myself, I used to go on the search for good pencils, etc...and there were good ones and bad ones, etc etc bla bla bla....I finally settled on mechanical pencils, because you can get great precision, fine shading, and no sharpening. but now my favorite drawing utensil is a ball point pen!
My point is, it's about the drawing, not the pencil. Pick up a pencil from the floor or someones desk and give it a go. Different strokes for different folks - nobody here can tell you what's best for you. I've made a decision to put less emphasis on expensive tools and more emphasis on the content and quality of my art, and once I gave up on the 'preciousness' of each creation, my work improved greatly!! Just my opinion, but worth giving a try!
