Besides in the gay community, I think people heard of gay bears there, but for straight people I'm not sure of people really know about it very much.

I just read this answer on this board: "was born this way. . . the normal way! I love puuuuuuuuuusy! I'll never be some pole smoking spooge gargling sissy boy! REAL MEN don't eat quiche and REAL MEN don't suck wang!"

I'm guessing that guy doesn't know much about gay bears, because they seem a bit more like real men to me than someone who is so insecure like that.

I've actually had gay people find it discusting that I like masculine men, it's so annoying, so It hink people who are gay don't even know much about it.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I think you are correct. I don't find effeminate men attractive either. (If I wanted a woman, I'd date one) I think there are many misconceptions about what a 'bear' is, even in the gay community. Never mind the straight community which thinks we all dress in drag. To me bears are just rejecting the feminizing of gay men and the narcissistic--young is pretty--image that has become attached to the gay community. And as far as the post you read, I know some 6'5 gay bears that I'd like see him say that to. I think I'd rather enjoy watching him be scrapped up off the floor afterward.

The bear community is generally a masculine oriented subculture in the gay community. The stereotypical idea of a bear is a man who is big, bearded and hairy; he comes fitted out in work boots, denim jeans, a flannel shirt or other types of clothing worn by the "average Joe." Yet bears come in all shapes and sizes, with or without facial hair. The bear movement in fact recognizes several niches within its ranks: A "cub" is a younger, usually playful, or relatively inexperienced bear; a "daddy bear" is a more mature bear; a "polar bear" is a white/gray-haired bear; an "otter" is a slimmer, trimmer bear; while a "wolf" is a bear with a good dose of predatory aggression. Being a bears is more of an attitude than a physical type. The mind set being they are more at ease with their masculinity, no matter what its form.

I believe you are correct...the str8 community doesn't really notice such things as labels, rainbows, or the like because perhaps, they cannot associate with them? The fear of the unknown? Or maybe it's just plain ignorance. I have str8 friends that swear we (GLBTQ people) have our own language, culture, and probably a secret handshake, too. And the other ones don't even give it a thought because it doesn't concern them...It could be a variety of factors, but I think we all understand the frustration of trying to be defined and understood. I like bears, the ones I know have a lot of integrity and a lot of pride. Very admirable.

I've been to some Bear parties, and Bear Runs in other cities. It's funny, in Chicago most bears are anywhere from football player built to really fat, and have hairy bodies, beards, or both, and tend to dress in Levi's and flannel or t-shirts, though there is some leather too. In Los Angeles, they tend much more to the leather side, and the hairy is not so important, and fat is OUT. In other places you have to be hairy hairy hairy, or it doesn't count. But in all cases, they do tend to appear more masculine, although I have walked up to a bear to say hello and when he answered, his purse fell out when he opened his mouth!

Masculine men are great! My partner is a bear. When I first came out I was attracted to twinks. No more, He is 5'10 220 a little chubby, but I grown to love it. I am 6'1 170 not too bearish.Maybe it's the "Daddy " Figure I think is hot. He is 5 years younger than I but still think of him as the elder of us. Just my thoughts.

Some know about it, some in the gay community have created their own stereotype about it... "Bear" referrs to body hair, usually including facial hair. The more muscular have a "branch" of the group called Musclebears.

We have never heard of such a thing. Seems that the straight people are the ones that know very much about such crap.

I thought a bear was gay who was fat, not necessarily masculine. I am into muscular guys, but I am not a chubby chaser. For that reason I have always stayed away from bear events. I just never imagined bears as super masculine types. I go I'll have to go inform my self.
