Well not using poison to kill a rat it may be hard to get rid of them. If they are in your house I recommend getting the "Rodent Be Gone" Electronic device that plugs into any 110 plug-in. If they are in your garage or animals sleeping area I would ecommend putting Coke(soda) in a bowl and leaving it out for them this will kill them but not poison inncent animals.

The best kind of trap I can think of is "Havahart." The best bait I can think of is dry dog food (water too if it's really hot in your area). It traps them, then you just release them back out in the wild. Also, be sure there's no food supply source nearby. Oh and even though the instructions that come with the trap suggest peanut butter and cheese for bait, I've found that they rarely work. Yogurt works good too, preferably strawberry flavor; oh and pretty much any kind of fruit except citrus will work.

The only bad thing I can think of with using one of those traps is it might take a while to catch them all, plus there's some that are too smart to walk into one. But as long as there's no other food source other than the one in the trap, they should eventually leave on their own. I hope this helps. =)

I've included a link to Havahart's website. You can either order them there or get them at Lowe's or other places like that.

"Humane" traps. Catch and release outside. Then figure out how they are getting in to your place, and block it. Also, make sure there are no food sources for them to go after. Time for a basement cleaning? I've also heard that there may be some electronic devices that emit high pitch sounds that will drive them away, but I don't know how effective they are. Good luck!

Live traps!! You can get a small live trap from any feed store.. You can get one here: http://www.abundantearth.com/store/mousetrap1.html

and here: http://www.victorpest.com/live_mouse_traps.htm

OR...... Go to Walmart, and get a live mouse trap for only $1.50!
Bait the trap with peanut butter, catch your pest and release it outside, far from your house...

Not only is it more humane, but it's NOT messy like a traditional trap...
