Crime-ridden slums. Nice. I grew up in Maryvale and my parents still live there. Maybe not as upscale as Scottsdale but slums is a little harsh.
Phoenix is a really big city and safe is a relative word. I live in west Phoenix (35th Ave & Glendale Rd) and feel safe walking after dark. Yet, some people wouldn't be caught dead in my neighborhood because of the zip code. I am, by the way, a 30 year old woman, not a huge hairy guy. :)
I suggest planning on staying at an extended stay hotel or with friends for a few weeks when you come out and drive through areas. If there is a place you like, get the zip code and look up crime stats on the internet. You can also look up if any registered sex offenders live nearby (important if you have kids).
Off my head, I'd suggest looking at north Phoenix near the I-17 or Loop 101 (convenient, newer, lots of available housing). There are suburbs (Avondale, Goodyear, Chandler, Scottsdale) but they are more of a freeway drive if you work in central Phoenix. And, if you want a red brick house in a nice neighborhood, come to where I live. There is a house for sale right down the street. :)

Goodyear is awesome and is one of the up and coming cities in the Valley. Palm Valley has more expensive housing and little crime. Just the normal car breakins that you get anywhere in the Vallye if you leave your car out of the garage overnight. It's all new development and we'll be getting a mall, more stores and restaurants within the next 2 years.

Like all big cities, there's really bad areas & really nice areas in & around Phoenix. I personally live in Glendale & love it. I recommend going north & west.

Stay out of Maryvale and South Phoenix, crime ridden slums. In fact most of Phoenix is becoming that way. Im leaving here when I retire.

I would suggest living in scottsdale. The area is more high class and there is generally less crime there. It is more expensive to like in scottsdale, but if you are looking for less violent crime it is the place to be.
