I'm looking for governments that have lasted longer than 200 years. Other than the U.S. of course. As I'm asking this, I feel like this is a stupid question. Give me grace please, if in fact it is obvious and I'm stumbling over the answer(s).

Actually, your friend is incorrect. There are more than the ones I have listed, here. Of course there were ancient dynasties like Egypt, China, Syria, Greece, Rome, Assyria, etc.

Japan (before 1868)
Nemanjic(Serbia) Dynasty (1190-1389)
Ottoman Empire (1299-1923)
Mughal Dynasty(1526-1857)
Great Britain

Not all of these governments were democratically elected into power. However, they were governments that lasted over 200 years.

Depends on how you define a government. If you mean a political party then there probably hasn't been a single political party in charge for more than 200 years, but if you mean a stable government then many countries have had them for longer than 200 years. The US, the UK, France, Spain etc etc.

How about the British monarchy? Been around longer than 200 years, by far. Since 802 A.D. as a matter of fact.

I'm not sure your friend is correct. There have been systems of government which have continued essentially unaltered for centuries. If he means, none have lasted for more than 200 years without a violent takeover, he might be quite correct.

Every ruler or leader who takes control of a government puts their stamp on it, and makes changes within it for the duration of their rule. So, none have lasted completely unchanged in for longer than any one ruler was in power, if that long.

The Magna Carta (the British equivalent of the Constitution), was written in 1215 and is still the law of the land.
