I understand that the gimmick is what made them famous, but, first album aside, their music is damn near unlistenable.

They were just a gimmick. The perfect example of adolescent rock.
And Ace Frehley had to be one of the worst guitarist - and I use the term very loosely - to ever pick up the instrument. Pathetic.

The best that a KISS apologist could muster would be:

'If rock critic pretentiousness was shoved into the dark resting-place where it belongs, then we'd recognise that rock: (a) ain't Shakespeare; (b) can be sheer entertainment, even if it's just the guilty pleasure of a catchy, loud but admittedly inane chorus.'

The problem with KISS was that, with a few exceptions, there weren't enough of the brainless-but-enjoyable songs, anyway. Close to 70% of their output is turgid and forgettable, hook-wise, which is sad for a band of that longevity.

The UK has its own version of KISS: Slade, whose moments of genuine, lunatic greatness were also too few and far between.

PS: Chops-wise, well Ace did what he had to do, I guess; I'd take him over show-off shredders like Yngwie Malmsteen, any day. 'Scorpion' above, has a good point which I agree with - but still, a band's music has to count for a little bit, too.

Yikes! I am a huge Kiss fan. They are basic rock and keep it simple. Understand that when they came out was in 1974. What else was going on in '74? Sabbath, Zep, and Skynyrd for the good. The bad (the hits) - Kung fu Fighting, Hooked on a feeling, Bungle in the Jungle, Seasons in the Sun.
So put yourself in that era. Imagine seeing Terry Jacks and then seeing Kiss.

what u need 2 understand is that KISS never had intensions of making no.1 hits, they simply knew how to play instruments but concentrated on bringing a fabulous stage show to the people , they concentrated on theatrics, they designed their own stages and they were out to give the people more than music, but a super stage show. notice they are not rated for their music but for their show, no other bad has been able to top a kiss show, I used to hat kiss back in 75 then i went to a show and now i know why they are so rich.

Wow, I thought it was just me. I think they are the most overrated band of all time. Musically, they have very little talent. As for Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, neither one of them can sing worth a ****. It's all a gimmick.

When I was twelve years old, when STYX, Supertramp ,ELO among other cheese acts ruled the airwaves, I was into right KISS. It was 1976. They were our "NSYNC".
Around the same time, Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols, Elvis Costello happened, I stopped liking KISS. KISS was a campy gimmick that was fun for twelve year olds.
I would venture to say most everything they did was cheesy crap.

Lick it Up

Dont wanna wait til you know me better
Lets just be glad for the time together
Lifes such a treat and its time you taste it
There aint a reason on earth to waste it
It aint a crime to be good to yourself
Chorus:
Lick it up, lick it up, its only right now
Lick it up, lick it up, ooh yeah
Lick it up, lick it up, come on, come on
Lick it up, lick it up

Dont need to wait for an invitation
You gotta live like youre on vacation
Theres something sweet you cant buy with money - lick it up, lick it up
Its all you need, so believe me honey
It aint a crime to be good to yourelf

Chorus

Come on - its only right now (its only right now)
Ooh yeah (ooh yeah) ooh yeah (ooh yeah), yeah yeah

Paul Stanley, Vinnie Vincent

Gasp! I love KISS. Compare them to some of the crap that is played on the radio today, and KISS music is genius.

I totally agree, and in my opinion the same goes for AC/DC. Kiss is to music as professional wrestling is to sports.

Absolutly! They could barely sing and thier song were pretty simple. What made them great was their stage preseance(the explosions, spitting blood, etc) and the mystery of their identity

They're very showy, but I have trouble sitting through most of their music. But it's better than rap.
