I'll be getting to use a laptop for some assignments I have, and it comes with some expensive software. My friend wants to download some of the software onto his computer from the one I'll be using. Is it ok, or legal, for me to let him do that?

Check the license agreement for the software in question.

If the agreement says it is illegal, then it's illegal.

Unless the software has a multi user license, it would be illegal. Allowing your friend to download the software would be no different than if you had walked into a software store and stolen one of the boxes off the shelf.

No, it is not legal. That is called pirating the software. You are infringing on the manufacturers copyright. Having said that, it is common practice and many people do it on a regular basis. Some manufacturers, knowing that people are going to copy their software, will encode safeguards into the software that make the copy unusable.
Judge for yourself whether you want to let him do it.

That depends on the software's license agreement. If it is ok, the rest of the decision is up to you. In my opinion, if the software costs a lot, I would not give it out for free!!!

Just because everyone is getting away with it doesn't mean it is okay. They can trace you down years later if they want to. Do the right thing and pay for what you get.

It is only illegal if you get caught.
Just return the laptop with $5 attached.
