It is very tentative right now, but I may be moving to the Chicago area. I have only visited Chicago twice in my life once to Navy Peir and the other visit to Skokie. What neighborhoods are low crime and middle class? I mean not skyhigh rent but not the slums either.

In general, the closer to the Loop, the higher the rents. Depending on your budget and your interests, there are many neighborhoods or suburbs that fit your limited criteria.

If you have friends in Skokie, start there. Public transportation is a big plus for getting around. Even Skokie has an "el" stop.

Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, South loop, River north are all nice areas, some may be a bit pricey. (Actually, parts of River north may be a bit iffy.) I would NOT recommend living in Hyde Park unless you're moving here to be at the Univ. Chicago. It may be safe within a few blocks, but it is surrounded by a very high crime-rate area. Moreover, it's really far from everything else. No one will ever visit you. And Chinatown is not exactly the safest area either.

Hyde Park is a great neighboorhood on the South Side it's 15 minutes from downtown by car. They have great shop's, nice cafe's, border's, and its Culturally Diverse. Minister Louis Farakhan lives in Hyde Park. I think its a lovely place to live.

South Suburbs have some good areas: Tinley Park, Mokena, New Lenox. I'd stay away from Blue Island and vicinity.

I heard Logan Square is the up and coming place now. Still affordable to live on your own, and mostly safe neighborhood.
