Do this the easy way that allows for future additions to your system.

Buy a 5 port router (a router serves two functions: it supplies IP addresses to your two computers and it provides a degree of defense against internet attacks against your equipment). Also buy a short length cat5 cable.

Disconnect the cable from your existing computer where it plugs into the modem. Install the new cable into the modem and into the input port on the router.

Attach the cables of the two computers into output ports on the router.

Since your windows 98 computer was plugged directly to the modem it will be looking for the IP address supplied by your ISP. Now your router is connected to that IP address, and your router is supplying IP addresses to the two computers. So you need to specify on each computer that its IP address
will be provided by DHCP (protocol for obtaining an IP address).

Now if you should get a networking printer you don't have to start over because you've added another device, you simply plug it in to the router.

Good luck! You can email me if you want more help.

Though you can connect both computers with a cross-over cable if both have Ethernet interfaces. Both computers need to have a similar IP / IPX addressing scheme. This can be done by hard-coding the addresses. A router may be your best bet, because it should automatically set these addresses for you and allow you to further expand your network or integrate broadband internet, if you wish to do so in the future. Once this is figured out, this may depend on what each computer has builtin and if available space is there to install such devices. I'll assume that the newer computer alreadly has an Ethernet interface and that the older may or may not.

Given this, lets first determine if the older computer is a laptop or desktop. If it is a laptop, you'll need to buy a PCMCIA (cardbus) slot or USB based Ethernet adapter. If it is an Desktop a PCI and USB adapter will suffice.

This will give you an idea of price ranges

Routers: $24 - $150
Ethernet (PCI): $8 - $30
Ethernet (PCMCIA): $20 - $40
Ethernet (USB): $25 - $70

buy a router. go to circuit city or best buy and ask the guy for a router. should be $45-$60. the router will come with diagrams and whatnot to walk you through the installation. it's all pretty self-explanitory.

of course, alternatively, you could connect your pc's directly to eachother using a cross-over cable (something you can also get at circuit city or best buy), but then neither one of them could access the internet. i assume your new computer is connected to the internet. without a router, you can only conenct your new pc either to the internet or to your old pc. one or the other. if you want your new pc to access both the internet and your old pc, (and make the process much easier) then you need a router.

and that previous website misinforms us. a crossover cable is used if you're conencting one pc directly into another. a straight-through cable (likely that you have these on hand) is used to connect each pc to a home router or switch. if you trust me on this, and not that previous website, you will find alleviate some issues right off the bat.

Actually, you don't have to have a router. You can have two ethernet cards in you main computer, one for the crossover cable to the second computer and the other one for your modem. Then both computers get online as long as the main computer is turned on.
