If you bake it with oil rubbed in, about 30 minutes. You must rub it with oil after each wash. This upsets my Wife, but otherwise, you get rust.

A properly seasoned cast iron skillet does not rust. If you have a cast iron skillet that has rust you need to remove the rust and re-season the skillet. You can use wet/dry sandpaper, wash & dry skillet.

Coat skillet with lard or Crisco and heat in 375 degree oven for about 2 hours. Cool completely & repeat at least 3 to 4 times. Only use skillet (first few uses) to cook high fat foods, like bacon or to fry chicken. Never wash with detergent, just plain water & never wash in dishwasher. Store skillet lightly coated with lard or Crisco.

Whoops, don't ever wash an iron skillet with detergent. After you remove the rust reseason it with pure lard and bake in the oven for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours at 350 degrees. When you clean it use hot water and dry it completely.

Please do not use soap on your cast iron skillet. It will strip the oils out of the skillet and leave it vulnerable to rust (which is what you are trying to avoid). Once the skillet is seasoned, you won't need to oil it after every use, just once in awhile.

if it has rusted, you have to scour the rust off before it can be used.

after that you will have to re-season the pan. heat the oven to 300. coat the pan with bacon grease. vegetable-based oils will leave a sticky surface, so go with bacon. place pan in the oven for up to 2 hours.

note that you'll have to repeat this process several times, and/or cook greasy foods in the pan before it gets adequately seasoned.
