What kind of wrestling do you mean? Wrestling in HS and college has an avid group of fans, but that is not hte stuff that is shown on TV. True wrestling, the type you see in the Olympics for example, is not a real spectator sport outside those who participated themselves. It is not something shown on TV. The stuff you see on TV is not a sport - it is bad acting; it is a "guys soap opera". Yes, it does have a following of people, but it is not a sport.
From a TV viewing perspective, Baseball, Basketball, and Football are the kings of the hill here in the USA. Hockey finishes a distant forth. Participation is another matter. Sure, those sports have a huge participation. Soccer (as we call it) has a huge following and participation at all levels from youth to adult. In most major or mid metropolitan areas in the USA, you can find one or more men's rugby sides. Rugby is also played a lot in college as is Lacrosse. Lacrosse has made its way down to younger and younger levels over the last 20 years.
With the basketball and football - college anyway - there are deep pockets of fans depending on where you live. College basketball, for example, is nearly a religion in places like North Carolina and Indiana. College and HS football are king of the hill in places like Texas, Florida, Georgia, and Western Penssylvania. Colleges have played a huge influence in that. Take Indiana for example - they have a great basketball tradition and the area loves its hoops. North Carolina has Duke and UNC with long hoops tradition adn the area folks love it. Wake Forest is an excellent hoops program in NC and NCSU has been up and coming for a few years.
Hope that helps. Just remember WWF "WRASTLING" isn't a sport - it is a show.

Vince McMahon. This is a tough question and something I needed to think hard about. I won't compete with Dragon's answer, lol. But I'll share my opinion. Vince made wrestling into what it is today, well WWE anyway. Other promotions such as TNA are trying to break away from the wrestling that Vince McMahon made. That wrestling is just like you said. Brawling and fighting here and there. Countless interferences, bare minimum clean finishes, short matches. The wrestling industry is being taken over by promo's and 'acting'. Vince did that. Vince made the biggest wrestling promotion in the world and he shaped it how he wanted it, and that's what you see today. It's a shame because like you said some people nowadays find the actual wrestling boring. People want to see all these promo's, gimmick matches and interferences. Well, that isn't wrestling. So Vince has single handedly changed the whole face of wrestling, and nothing is greater. Although the internet has had an impact on wrestling, I think the internet has ruined the fun of wrestling. Each time you come on the internet for whatever reason, especially here, you always see damn spoilers and predictions. Yahoo in general has helped ruin wrestling, this section has ruined it, half the people here have ruined the fun of wrestling. Wrestling isn't as fun because all we do is predict. Then we all complain how it was predictable. If we didn't have sites like these then we wouldn't predict matches and results, wrestling would be unpredictable and exciting. It is good to come here and share opinions and such things, but it still ruins the fun. Spoilers are another bad thing, no matter how hard you try you always seem to see them. Especially here, most people here are stupid little halfwits who ruin it for everyone else. Internet has impacted wrestling only for few fans. The impact is that WWE and other promotions have become less fun, less exciting and way too predictable. Because when we come here all we're thinking about is what's gonna happen tonight on Raw, what's gonna happen at this PPV, who's gonna win, this person is a future world champion, blah blah freakin blah. And the spoilers has the same impact. Both have impacted wrestling in so many ways, some for the better but most for the bad. Vince has impacted wrestling the most because he's made it what it is, and his promotion is basically what influenced all other promotions. The internet has still impacted it. I reckon that Vince has changed wrestling in bad ways, and in many good ways. However, the internet imo has only impacted wrestling in a sour and negative way. If we didn't have the internet, then everything would be a surprise and the future would not be ruined.

Wrestling is quite popular among certain segments of the population in America. However I wouldn't compare it to football, cricket or basketball because all of those are sporting events where as wrestling is entertainment...like a concert or a play.
