Did you mean by displacing water? It was Archimedes. But he didn't do it to save his own life. Rather, once his discovery was used to find out that someone had ripped off the King by giving him a crown not completely made from gold, the maker of the crown was killed.

The weight of the displaced fluid is directly proportional to the volume of the displaced fluid (specifically if the surrounding fluid is of uniform density). Thus, among objects with equal masses, the one with greater volume has greater buoyancy.
