To answer this question honestly the best shortstop in the american league is Derek Jeter hands down but Tejada and Young have strong contention for the 2nd. If it came down to team leader Jeter would win in a landslide but if it came down to offiense it is Young and Tejeda. Yonng beats out Tejeda for second because he is happy to be on the Rangers. So Jeter running away in first then Micheal Young, the Migel Tejeda.

While Jose Reyes may be the best SS in baseball right now, you specified American league only. Therefore the answer is easily Derek Jeter. In the American league there are few others that come close to the season he is having at that position. Jeter is having one of his best season's over the past five years.

Derek Jeter..in the past 2 years he has 2 gold gloves..he is second in batting average in the american league right now.. he is a great clutch hitter and he carries the yankees day in and day out
