AS far as I know there are two types of transmissions.
1. Automatic transmission the type that is used in TVS50, Sunny, and Kinetic Honda scooters are used. This is easier to ride but takes large amount of fuel to run.
2. The other system is manual where a set of gears are introduced between engine and wheel which enhances the output of engine to a greater extent and with the same output of engine the power is increased by using suitable gear.
A leading motorbile company in India, introduced a 100cc motorbile with automatic transmission to be used by women was not much of success. The automated transmission was such that as you increase your speed the bike changes the gears automatically which is good. But it is complicated and need high skill to maintain.

I don't know what a Honda dio is. There are two different types of automatic clutches on motorcycles. CVT & Centrifugal.
Here's a picture of a "Pulley-Based CVT" in action.
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/cvt.htm
I'll explain how a Centrifical clutch works. Go to this site and click Go-Kart Centrfugal Clutchs.
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/clutch1.htm
The top picture - The sprocket is permanently attached to the outer clutch (it's like a brake drum on a car) and that turns the rear wheel with a drive chain (like chain & sprockets. Scooters and mopeds use a drive belt). The inner part of the clutch is attached to the motor. The clutch shoes are held in a closed position with springs. When you accelerate, the motor spins the inner clutch. The clutch shoes expand from the centrifugal force and grab the outer clutch.

An automatic transmission in a bike works just like the one in your car.
Forget the automatic and take the time to learn how to ride a manual. They are a lot more fun!
