we just layed cement for a foundation for a shed, which is the same for a driveway or sidewalk. we had a cement truck come and dump the cement, it was much cheaper and less time consuming and a whole lot easier. but to get ready for the cement, we had to dig out the spot and place boards around to frame it. then filled with sand for the base. it has to be completely level and the sand should be flat compact and damp. then when the cement goes in, you need a shovel or rake to "poke" the cement to release air pockets so it doesnt crack later. then once its poked and smoothed, we took a piece of wood across, to level it out, and then an edger to go around the edges. then to get the roughed up top so its not slippery when wet, you take a broom and just sort of drag carefully across to give a finished look yet not slick . if you want the lines in it, you should lay dowels or boards across before you pour the cement. or you could cut them later the next day just so it dont crack. we covered ours that night with a tarp, and then watered it the next day. we poured it on monday and by friday we started work on the shed. theres lots of tips online if you have questions, or if your mixing the cement yourself, you can ask at home depot or wherever. buy some boots to wear in the cement, so you can walk through it while working with it, theyre cheap, like 13 dollars. we had 3 yards of cement poured for about 200 dollars.

Have you ever smelled hot pavement? It is revolting! Concrete has a smell, but it's not too bad. But that pavement smell will choke you!

Hire someone for that one. You'd have to be a pretty hardcore do-it-yourselfer to do that job. Note: The stuff is hard to wash from clothing too.
