I am planning to drive around in Athens and was wondering if street names and road signs are written in the Greek alphabet.

Driving signs are of course the international signs and they don't have letters (except of the STOP sign that is written in english).

As for the street names they are written both with greek and latin letters. Just be careful because some of the translations are really stupid. You will understand the road Fokionos Negri, because it will be written in the map in the same way. But you may look for the Syntagma Square in the map and in the road sign it could be PLATEIA SYNTAGMATOS (just changing the greek letters to latin). Then you just a greek to help you.

Most important sign are written in both. Driving in Athens is one hell of an experience! Many signs are hidden behind something else. If not then someone will see it as a great place to post an ad about some music event. Stay calm and kalo taxithi (that's have a good trip)
There are only 24 Greek letters and half are the same. Why not sit down one evening and crack it?

Actually -knowing the Greek alphabet is part of Western heritage. If you are going there you would have a lot of fun knowing the alphabet -and that is not so difficult. After coming home you would know what Jesus meant when He said he is the alfa and the omega -and you would understand delta waves and gamma rays. As you notice, we use the Greek letters all the time. And if, by any chance, you would later want to learn Russian or some other Slavic languages, the Greek alphabet would help! so go into a little trouble -and enjoy the fruits of your labor!

They are written in both languages Greek and english, but the translation is from greek word, for ex. Σόλωνος will be writted as Solonos steet not the translation , by the way Solon was a great jurist in ancient Greece. Have a nice journey in Greece!.

Both. But some roads are known with a different name that is written on the road-plates p.e. P.Tsaldari str (as road table writes) is known as Pireos str. but it;s very easy to drive in Athens because people are very friendly and very helpful.
So nothing to fear!!! Good vacations!

Mostly all in Greek. It's not too hard to get though, just practice before you get there. And seriously, driving in Athens is the WORST experience one could ever have, EVER! And maybe one of the most dangerous.
