For one, turn off the gas. Don't use any chemicals that are flamable. Clean back there often so when you do have to clean, it's not a five hour ordeal.

you should always make sure you have enough room to pull it out with out breaking the gas connector line and its always safe to turn it off at connector behind stove in case you break hose. dont smoke or use flammable cleaner. you may want to put cardboard under the leg levels so it doesnt rip lino/tiles. Hopefully its just dusty. If stove hasnt been moved in years be prepared to scrape off "yuck" greasy mess with spatula and a degreaser. check lines for wear ,cracks, and loose connections. Ive cleaned behind many gas stoves over years this was our procedure on job.

Also be aware that it may stick to the floor, you might have to lift it for a second just to free it so you can slide it out. TSP or simple green are excellent cleaners for this greasy job.
