Symptomatic
Lozenges (cough medicine) are often used for short-term pain relief.
Gargling with warm salty water is a popular household remedy, although there is only anecdotal evidence this gives anything other than temporary relief and likewise for the use of aspirin gargles.
Warm tea or soup can help temporarily alleviate the pain of a sore throat.
Analgesics such as NSAIDs can help reduce the pain associated with a sore throat.
Cold beverages and popsicles numb the nerves of the throat somewhat, alleviating the pain for a brief time.
Mouthwash (when gargled) reduces the pain but only for a brief time.
There have been some studies that show ingesting a solution high in protein can have a profound relieving effect on sore throats, particularly if they are allergy related.[citation needed]
Drinking Heavy Amounts of liquid reduces the pain for a short time. However water is most recommended.

Take a nice hot shower and let the steam fill up the bathroom. Stay in the shower as long as you can stand and breathe the vapors. Run a humidifier or vaporizer in your room at night. Try some Vicks Vaporub on your chest, throat, and back. Drink plenty of liquids, especially some hot teas. Don't yell, or talk too loudly. If you smoke, try to cut back. Massage your glands and place a nice hot rag on your throat. I understand what it's like to not be able to see a doctor when you need one. Check out this page for more advice.

Gargle warm salt water.
Throat spray (it helps numb the pain)
throat drops.
Feel on your neck where your throat is and make sure it isn't feeling too swollen. If it gets worse, you might need to see a doctor. It could be strep throat. With strep throat you will have swollen glads and feel really tired. It is an infections so it would be best treated by the doctor.
Also, don't share drinks and food with people, you don't want to spread it.

An ancestor of mine died of sore throat untreated. Are you sure it is not an option?
If only red, perhaps you could treat it. If you have white puss, then it is likely bad, could be a strep infection...could develop into scarlet fever, rheumatic fever leading to heart problems even if healed.
If it is not that bad, gargle with listorine every few hours...Let it touch the redness. Salt water is good too. Hot honey-lemon tea is soothing remedy.

Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. There are many over the counter preparations that soothe your throat. At home remedies include tea with honey, hot water with lemon, etc. Green tea would remove toxins from your body. Gargling with salt water would help your throat. Avoid milk and milk products until you feel better.
If you have a stuffy head or nose, make sure you blow your nose constantly. That post nasal drip is so irritating to your throat.
I hope you feel better soon.

Gargling with warm salt water is supposed to be healing, but if your throat is red and inflammed and you can see white patches on the back of your throat and tonsils, you should try to get to the dr as it could be an infection or strep, and antibiotics are necessary. A strep infection that goes untreated can cause you major health problems in the future.
