There are tensions but nothing as evident as in some parts of the US against Mexicans. In overall there is no racial discrimination here. I'm a brown skinned immigrant who speaks a heavily accented English and I'm succeeding as a professional and the only hurdles I've had to overcome are the ones the other people struggle with: being competent, keeping myself up to date, being dependable, keeping myself accountable, paying taxes, paying fines, cursing whenever I get traffic tickets, thinking twice before smiling at my neighbour's wife, etc.

Brazil is NOT a racial democracy where all races live together in harmony. Racial democracy is Brazil is a cultural myth, which, paradoxically, even some Afro-Brazilians might believe, partly because of all of the propaganda we were submitted when we were under military rule. For more on that, see references [1], [2] and [3]. You can find even more references by googling "Brazil racial democracy myth". If Brazil is not racist, why in my high-prestige college class, there was not a single Afro-Brazilian, even if they are about 12% of the population? (and, actually, 52% describing themselves as not-white, including blacks, "morenos", "mulattoes", etc.). Why my bosses and the management level of the companies I worked for in Brazil were all male Caucasians? About racism in Brazil, also read this week's The Economist article for racism in Brazil. Whether Hispanics will discriminate to Caucasians, that I do not know. It is a hypothetical question. About the third question, why the American ancestors drove out the Native Americans and brought slave from Africa... I am going to answer the question from a Brazilian point-of-view. As I studied Brazilian history in school, my history text book said: "Native Brazilian Indians were lazy, so the Portuguese brought slaves from Africa to work in the sugar cane mills". Now I know that the text book authors were actually racist too. Native Brazilians were not good slaves because they did not want to work as slaves... who can blame them for that? Think about that. You are a Native Brazilian, you know how to live off the rain forest on your own means. A Portuguese comes and enslaves you. What is the first thing you are going to do? You are going to run away - you are not afraid of the rain forest - you know your way around. You can survive long enough until you find members of your own tribe. The slaves brought from Africa, however, were in a distant land, and they couldn't survive long if they ran away. Some, of course, did, and they thrived in colonies called "quilombos". (some of these colonies were then attacked by the Portuguese). Racism, unfortunately, is ubiquitous. To eradicate it, we need to educate our children and the next generations so that they grow up learning that we can all live together and can all contribute to the human enterprise.

It exists everywhere, it is part of human nature whether we like it or not. Of course we should fight it before it even takes form in the inside, but that's not the point right now.

It is illegal but it does exist. Maybe in more subtle and hidden ways than elsewhere.
