they're good swimmers.
There are elephants in indonesia islands and they need to swim in the pacific ocean to go from one island to another. (for example)
However, the only part you will see above the water is the trunk. They use it as a submarine would use a snorkel to get air.

A lot of people already gave the correct answer (yes they can swim) so let me just add that I love elephants. I would hug an elephant's trunk!

Elepahnts are quite good swimmers actually.if you ever visit the Serengeti you might see some sticking their trunks ouyt of a swimming hole to breath.
