There are patterns in collective human behavior, such as the transformation of governments from republics to empires, and the eventual fall of empires from a combination of multiculturalism and military overextension.

History shows you these kinds of patterns, so that you can see them when they reoccur. You could warn your fellow citizens of a disaster that you know is coming, but which they cannot see because they can't recognize the signs.

Most of them, the stupid ones, will call you a "conspiracy theorist," and when events prove that you were right they'll pretend that they never heard any of your words on the subject. But you might be able to alert a few people, and your chances of saving yourself are much better, if you know the patterns of history.

Be careful about which truths you tell and how you tell them. Sometimes the lies about history get elevated to "sacred" status. Historical lies are occasionally protected by law, and you might go to prison and be branded as a felon if you dispute the "official version" of history in public.

When evil rules the world and is driving all to destruction beneath it, be careful whom you choose to trust with the truth, unless you want to become a martyr.

havent you heard the phrase that if you don't know your history you're doomed to repeat it - think about for a minute....history doesnt have to mean stuffy old white guys only...history just means past events that have occurred - so when your mom tells you as a toddler not to touch the stove, you listen for the most part, but then you decide to touch the stove and you burn your hand...you suffered the consequences and from that very moment you learn that you should not touch the burner ....and you probably wont touch the stove throughout your life....well, life is filled with those moments of learning...history is just a collection of all those moments - and they can be magnified on a much greater scale....all that has occurred in history affects the present day circumstances...so, in short, you should really look critically at history and see how do act responsibly in the present...you can learn so much!

There are so many reasons! The old adage about those who don't know history being condemned to repeat it is so true. Having knowledge about history allows us to examine the practices of earlier regimes, totalitarian governments, etc. We can study the techniques that the Nazi's first employed, for instance, and make sure that we never allow laws to be passed in our country that will lead to wholesale persecution.

In addition, having some knowledge of history allows for a better understanding of current events and conflicts. One can't truly discuss any current event or trend with any intelligence if they have no historical perspective.

Wow, what a great question.

History is important for several different reasons, but none of them is good enough of a reason to major in it in college. ;)

History tells us (the human race) a lot about ourselves, and through that self-discovery can help us become better individuals, nations and humans.

The story of the Renissance tells us about the wonders of human achievement in art. It shows us what beautiful things man is capable of and shows us that great works do not necessarilly come out of powerful cultures.

The story of Nazi Germany tells us about the horrors that man can create, and what an unchecked government is capable of. We learn the importance of freedom, fighting tyranny and oppression and that no matter how bad things get, good can still triumph over evil.

The story of the Jewish people tell us about carrying on through ages of persecution.

The story of slavery reminds us that Americans, while powerful now, wern't always morally right.

...The stories go on and on and each one has a lesson about humanity.

Another reason is that we should study history so that we can have a better idea where our present actions could lead us.

The events of history often re-occurs in the lives of Individuals and Nations. All the mistakes that we committed earlier should not be repeated further in futures. This is the lesson we get it from History which is why it is important.

History is important because:
1. we learn from the mistakes of people in the past.
2. we learn how our present way of life came to be.
3. we learn how our culture started.
4. we learn to innovate.
5. we learn.

History is important to learn so that we understood where we came from, how our country was born, and how we got to where we are today.
