The first tetrapods to evolve did in fact have more than 5 toes, it all stems from the fact that land vertebrates legs evolved from the fins of fishes. Some amphibians had up to about 8 toes! As time progressed these became reduced to the 5 we know today. Some animals have only one toe on each foot.... yes I am talking about the horse!

God only gave us five fingers so we could sit at our computer and debate why we have as many fingers as we do, and because 10 is a nice round number. You can't beat 10.

God gave you five fingers because it is the best design. One finger less, you would not have enough, One finger more, it would really be more in the way, than useful.

Well, on an evolutionary basis, early creatures had no fingers so five is quite a lot. If we had extra fingers at one time, they disappeared because we didn't really have a use for them I guess.

We have five fingers, one being an opposable thumb, because science has proven it to the perfect device for picking up a beer bottle.

Now, that is a conundrum. Probably because we have four knuckles and opposing thumbs per each hand. May I suggest that you find a hobby so you won't be worrying about such moot points?

If you had an extra finger, what would you do with it that you cant do with only five? (i wont blame you if you cant answer,because i dont think there is any good answer.)
