read Dale Carnegie's "how to win friends and influence people".
It's an old book, but has good basic advice and exercises you can do to practice. Above all, it emphasizes sincerity.

There are even seminars based on this book. My boss forced me to take this course when i was in my 20's (well they paid for it too - and it is pricey). I was shy and not a good public speaker and it really helped.

What I do is read alot of positive motivational books and make every moment count it takes alot of reconditioning your thinking and habits at first until it becomes second nature. Focus on the person you would like to become and keep reading to maintain that desire, as it is easy to fall back to being just another ordinary person, you want to make your personality and life shine. Like nike says "Just do it!"
