Fortunately, our baby never got constipated. Easy in, easy out.
But we never kept him on rice, we always switched between barley and oats (apparently that helps avoid constipation).
Try reading this link below. There are some good suggestions about massage, crawling, etc.
Good Luck :-)

Yes, my baby did the same thing. One day he started screaming when he went, and when I changed him his little hole had blood on it from the poop being so hard, and I started crying.
There are a number of things you can do. I think the best is to give your baby a little apple juice or prune apple juice. They can have up to 4 ounces a day, and its best to give only 2 at a time. The juice softens up the poop so that when they go, its not hard. Too much juice can cause diarrea.
Another thing you can try is a glycerin suppository. You can get them from walmart and they have little ones for babies. It says for children 2 and under ask a doctor, but you can make them even smaller by just cutting the tip off. A nurse from nursewise ( a number you can call if you have medicaid to ask questions from reg. nurses) told me I could do that, but fortunately I didnt have to. I have noticed that the juice works just fine.
When I told my doctor about the rice, he told me to try oatmeal cereal, and now that is what I give my baby and he doesn't get constipated any more, so maybe you can ask your dr. about the oatmeal.

No, my son never got constipaed in his life. When we first gave him rice cereal, it was only a very small amount and he was still breastfeeding at least 10-12 times in 24 hours, so the natrual laxitive properties of breastmilk probably helped. I think he is also a lucky baby who just isn't predisposed to constipation, since it doesn't seem to matter what he eats, his poops rarely even firm up at all.
A baby who is truly constipated needs more breastmilk and maybe a little water. I would also recomend cutting back or cutting out solids until baby is pooping normally again.

APPLE JUICE!!!! It works every time. Once a day and dilute it with water. So depending on how old your baby is give baby maybe an ounce of apple juice and an ounce of water. ONCE A DAY though you don't need diarrhea which could lead to diaper rashes even though I have an 8 week old and no rash for her yet. Boys will always be different than girls! This should help, either that or stick a thermometer around the buttocks to help it out but who wants to do that?

I am not sure how old your child is.. but when mine were eating theres.. if I knew it would make them constipated I would give them some baby juice like apple or prune that would help counteract it. Or add that fruit to his rice cereal too to counteract. I do admitt that I did do Karo syrup a few times as well putting it in their milk and that helped, but I would suggest doing the other stuff.

Prune juice will help your kid go poop, but prune juice will turn constipation into diarrhea in about three seconds, literally. If rice makes him constipated, don't feed him rice.

I gave my daughter some juice. The doctor told me to stick the tip of a thermometer into her anus. She was supposed to push to try to get that our , and than that would make her have a bm. It didn't work for my daughter , but it might work for your baby.

this sounds so gross but when my daughter was born my doctor had us use a washcloth and massage the hole a little (not sticking anything in) but just rub and supposedly it stimulates the muscles it worked for us you can also try a little mineral oil, or take his temp rectally and after he may poop. good luck
