En masse? Never. It never existed, never will. Mankind's irrational, self-absorbed, and most people are too ignorant to see it in themselves let alone fix it. The same patterns play out again and again, the exact circumstances change, but the general behaviors, thought patterns, etc, don't. We've always been a disaster as a species, and we always will. We're too complicated for anything other than what we already are.
FYI: "sane" and "insane" are relative terms. There's nothing really definitive, and it's all relative. One man's insane is another man's sane. As such, your question is kind of pointless because you're asking for us to base an answer on something that doesn't have a defined series of standards. ;)

Your question is based on a logical fallacy. You assume that at some point "sane thinking" actually prevailed. That is a common misconception that "The Good Ol' Days" were better than the present. But they weren't the majority of people are narcissistic idiot, and its always been that way. Sorry to break it to you. Cut your own swath. Know your machete.

In terms of the world? Sadly, I do not know. In terms of my life, the older I get, the saner I become. I rather enjoy the aging process. For all of my short comings, I DO think I am growing up. I think my choices are becoming more mature and my childishness is lessening. I'm happy with myself and I truely believe,though it may sound trite, that the best is yet to come. I'm excited.
