Sorcha and Keepsondancing gave good answers about what it is. I want to address WHY it is.
Every few months science learns something "new" about vitamins and minerals and other components of food that our body needs for optimal health. Often what is learned is that the whole food contains something the man-made supplement doesn't.
For instance, the manufacturers have recently started offering us vitamin E softgels with "mixed tocopherals" instead of just "d-alpha tocopheral" because they found out there is benefit in them.
A few years ago they started adding bioflavinoids to the best vitamin C supplements. And using "Ester-C" (calcium ascorbate)instead of ascorbic acid. And adding things like rose hips and Indian gooseberry. The whole foods that contain vitamin C are usually easier on our stomachs and better assimilated than the acid. And have added benefits. For instance, quercetin, a bioflavinoid in oranges, helps prevent hayfever. And rutin, another bioflavinoid occuring in buckwheat, helps heal varicose veins.
More and more I'm starting to agree with Dr. Andrew Weil and others who tell us to EAT right rather than relying only on supplements for our nutrition.
IMO, vitamin C with rose hips is a better product than one without.

The rose hip, also called the rose haw, is the pomaceous fruit of the rose plant. It is typically red to orange but may be dark purple to black in some species.
Rose hips of some species, especially Rosa canina (Dog Rose), have been used as a source of Vitamin C. Rosehips are commonly used as a herbal tea, often blended with hibiscus and as an oil. They can also be used to make jam, jelly and marmalade. Rose hip soup is especially popular in Sweden. Rhodomel, a type of mead, is made with rose hips.

Rose hips are the seed pods of roses. They are naturally high in Vitamin C. However, plain Vitamn C without rose hips is just as effective. Your body cannot tell the difference as to the source.

After the petals have fallen off the rose, the "hip" is what is left. They are considered the best source of vitamin C in nature. Another great source is Kiwi fruit.
