Seems to be a style thing...back in the day we used to call it punk...either way I find it ugly....but live and let live, right? What do you think?

My son told me that EMO was a type of music and the style of people that listened to it. His friend told me that it was just some emotional people, and someone else told me that it was depressed people. I think they are tacky and embarrass their parents dressing like that.

EMO can be alot of things, but can really boil down to a bunch of a stereotypes. There's this really funny song that pokes fun at Emos and I feel it describes an Emo kid much better than I can...

I only ever knew one kid who was emo... He always complained about his life in a way that was obviously meant to make me feel sorry for him. And I did, sorta. But he still annoyed the hell out of me.
It's a style- but different from gothic or punk. Gothic is a bit angry... Punk is shocking, or pissed. Emo is plain depressed. Tight clothes- on guys at least. Dunno why... Maybe to show how "constrained" they feel or something...
It's also a music genre. I thought it was more recent, but then I heard someone say groups like Hawthorne Heights weren't real "emo" in the way old school emo was (I asked, apparently old school emo= the Cure... and I like the Cure sometimes but I don't consider myself EMO).
Finally, emo and punk are two VERY different things.

If you ask me, Emo kids are usually depressed over relational issues, like breakups with boyfriends/girlfriends, family issues, or bad times at school. Goths, on the other hand are depressed about everything, and have a very dark personality, usually dealing with death, suffering and how bleak the world is. Emo kids usually dress the typical "punk" style, with lighter colored clothing and "suave" hairdoos. Goths almost always wear black, or other dark colored clothing, and have radical hairstyles. I'm with you, too. I don't particularly like Emo kids either.

Emo stands for "emotional" in case you've ever heard any songs that have been classified as emo.
But it does have it's differences from punk. Punk is like Clash, Ramones, ect. and emo is like a cheap ripoff of goths minus heavy metal plus songs which complain about the world and how cruel it is.

Emo stands for emotional. It is a genre of music that is mainly "punky" soundy and the lyrics are that about breaking-up or some emotional turmoil.
The style that many emo bands wear is the following:
-Black Buddy-Holly-like horn rim glasses.
-Tight pants and vintage clothing.
-Chuck Taylors or Doc Martins for shoes.

Emo most definetely is not Punk rock.I'm punk rock. Emo is like the root word of emotional, in this case it means emotionally dark a relative of gothic. almost to a suicidal point.

I've been trying to figure that out too.
It stands for "emotional" apparently.
As near as I can tell these were the depressed goth kids when we grew up, but they've broken off from the rowdy goths to make their own group.

check out this podcast called "hope is emo" its hilarious.
emo people are "emotional" punks who like to listen to sad music. they are really just depressing teenagers who like to dress up and put on makeup (guys too). its pretty sad that somthing hard and raw and exciting like punk could turn into somthing so gay and rediculously fake. emo people are just posers looking for attention.

an emo person in someone who hates there life.. want to die.. they wear tight close and black eyeliner..it is also a music style and in the songs they mostly sing about sucide and death..its really deprerssing!!
