Do you indicate that the family should give it to a church, community group, etc.? Or do you just leave it up to the family to use how they want? Please explain your reasoning for your answer. Thanks!

I, personally, leave it to up to the family to decide, as some people may have trouble covering funeral costs.

However, when my sister-in-law died, MANY people designated that the money should be donated to something.

I'm just wondering what YOU do when you give a card...do you leave it open or indicate what they should give it to?

You should leave it up to the family. The family doesn't need to be told how to use it. They are grieving so most likely they are not going to take it and go on a shopping spree. And funerals are expensive so they will most likely be very grateful and use the money in a good way. It might also seem insulting to them if you designate how the money is supposed to be spent.

Money Given At Funeral

When you go to the funeral home, many have cards/envelopes that can be used for your designation, such as to a church or other organization. The funeral home usually has them sitting out and they have lines to write where you want your donation to go. When you put money in a card, it is always up to the family how they want to use it. It is considered tacky to put it an a card and then tell them what to do with it when they are the ones you have given it to. Hope this helps! God bless!

The only time I have know of people giving cards with money are co-workers or sometimes their church. They will take up money. It is usually for the family to help out with whatever expenses they chose to use it for.

If you are wanting to send a card solely from you, I wouldn't suggest sending money. I know you mean well but just the card itself would be plenty. If you are close to the person, a few weeks after the funeral come by and visit. Bring a plate to them or take them out to eat. They will need the companionship later.

(instead of sending flowers, you could make a donation to a charity as well).

It is inappropriate to give money as a gift at a funeral unless the family has directed money be given to a charity instead of flowers. If it is a sudden death of a young person and it is known the family is in financial need, you do not give money.

If you are giving money and want it to be donated somewhere, donate it yourself. Then, in the card, put that you donated X amount of dollars in memory of the person who died. I'm no manners expert but to me it sounds a little strange or rude just to give money and then say what that money should be used for.

Put the money in the card to the family; you don't need to be specific (it is for the FAMILY). What is all these questions? Either you want to give money in all sincereity or not!

The family will decide how the deceased would want the money used. It may be that the deceased would have wanted it used to help the survivors in the family.

Peace.

Leave it up to the family, unless they have set up a specific memorial. If you want, you can donate it yourself to a specific cause in that persons name.
