It's not meant to be known. To him, it was what saved him. So it was better left not to be known, then to open it and be disappointed.

I think it was something made by the lady at the beginning of the movie -- remember she was a welder -- she was making something as the FedEx guy came in. It was for her ex or current husband, who was obviously fooling around or had moved overseas to Russia.
Remember that when he got back to civilization, they said that there had been an explosion on the plane -- could it have been some welding equipment???
But, I wondered that too -- why he never opened it, and why the angel-wings motif was so important for him -- maybe it represented hope? divine intervention?
The way the movie ended, seemed to imply that he was going to turn his car around, and head back to her place; but it was ambiguous at the same time.

The contents of the last FedEx package were not material to the plot. Why even speculate...unless you think there will be a sequel?

i actually have no idea what's in the package, but you can find out on the original dvd, i think it goes something like this: click the treasure box 4 times (sorry I'm not sure), but I read it off somewhere in a book, the director also explains why he didn't open it. Hoped it helped, really sorry, I'm seriously curious though...

I saw Tom Hanks on "Inside the Actors' Studio" with James Lipton, and he himselft said that is was never made known what was in the box. But, in the movie, Tom was to deliver that last box to the sendee (a woman) and that would get them to hook up.

What was int he package was irrelevant. If he opened the package, then that meant he had lost all hope.

Good question, I never even thought about it. It would be ironic if it was a fully recharged cell phone that could "work" on the island, (LOL).
