Using windows? Go to sound properities and make sure that where ever the mic is plugged in is set as the default recording device. Also make sure the mic volume is up.

make sure its in the mic jack and not the input jack
then go
control pannel
sound
and check the mic setting and configure if needed...
also make sure the mic is on, has batteries if needed

Open the volume control in the tray, click on the options button and check the mic controls. It may be turned off.

maybe you plugged your mic in the wrong place. i think you plug it where it is a pink park with a mic picture, if your using dell
