where do the frets start? I'm not sure I understand. The notes from 6th string to 1st are E,A,D,G,B and E. those are open notes, you don't hold the strings. I guess the frets would "start" at the top by the nuts you use to tune the guitar. If you want the 1st fret you'd hold the string just after the bridgeand before the fret.
top = -----------
1st fret
----------
2nd fret
----------
etc.

Fret - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frets

"Frets divide the neck into fixed segments at intervals related to a musical framework. On instruments such as guitars, each fret represents one semitone in the standard western system where one octave is divided into twelve semitones."

on the neck...each section is a fret, and the section with two dots is the 12th fret, the first fret is closest to the head

The 'nut' is the beginning. the first fret comes next. Just place your fingers where their supposed to go and if it doesn't sound right you missed it a little. Keep at it, it's not rocket science. Just keep at it!

Learn Bar Cords

The cords of E, A & G and good ones to learn.

Most rock is based on Blues cords so learn to strum bar cords in a blues progression... which is also a Rock progression

For Example:

EEEE AAAA EEEE AAAA GGGG EEEE
