I have shut down the computer and rebooted but nothing. I have Internet Explorer, but all my bookmarks are on Firefox so I can't access any of them. If I delete and reinstall, I will probably regain use of Firefox but will have lost the bookmarks.

I had a similar problem when I upgraded some of the extensions. It would start to open and then it would lockup. Then I went to their website and downloade v1.5 and everything works now except for one extension (session saver) which has not been updated to work with the new version.

After upgrading, all my bookmarks were still there so I was a happy camper.

Your firewall may be preventing Firefox from accessing the internet or you may have accidentally made IE your default browser.

Here's the Firefox help page link where you'll be able to find the answers you need:

Once you get back into Firefox, export your bookmarks to IE, so if you're ever "locked out" again, you'll have a backup source. :-)

+Click ctrl-alt-delete and click the processes tab.
+Align the processes by name, and see if there's any firefox.exe processes running.
+If there are, end the process (right click - end process, or click end process below)
+you'll get a warning message, but it's ok
+restart firefox

reinstalling might not make you lose your stuff, in fact, I'm almost sure of this, but I don't want to recommend it and be wrong. ...When you install a new version of firefox, it keeps your stuff...

Hit Ctrl-Alt-delete and check to see if is already running. If it is then shut it down. Give it a few seconds to re-set and then you should be able to restart it.

Hope this helps.
