You usually start by coaching at the high school level, probably as an assistant coach (like a position coach). Then you get a job in the college ranks, maybe again as an assistant coach. Eventually, you may work your way up to offensive or defensive coordinator, or maybe even head coach. Then you get hired by an NFL head coach or general manager who's seen your work at the college level.
You'll probably come into the NFL as a position coach, or if you're lucky, a coordinator, or if you're REALLY lucky, and have great statistics at the college level, an NFL head coach.

Start out most likely by playing a position - eventually you'll need to get hired on as some type of assistant coach, probably at the college level. Work your way up through the various levels of coaching positions on a team - offensive coordinator, assistant coach, etc - most NFL head coaches have coached at the college level - you probably can't expect to jump straight from college to NFL coaching - you would move to an assistant level coaching job for a NFL team and eventually - this is all considering you are good at it! - you could become an NFL head coach.

You probably need to start by being a player. During that time you will want to learn all you can about the game. If you are not playing college football when you are in college you should offer your services as an intern to a college team whose coaching staff you regard highly.

You have to sign up in a coaching buisness and be filthy rich beyond your dreams.

You have to be smart. Love the game and take advantage of opportunities as they present themselves. I remember Marvin Lewis from high school. He was definitely smart and loved the game.
